Personal Coaching
If you don't have a Life Coach you aren't living life to your full potential ... period! When, Why and How did Brian begin his Life Coaching Program? I've been doing one-on-one personal coaching now for over 18 years. Except, back then, we didn't call it Life Coaching or even personal coaching. It was just "coaching" Now it seems there are as many different types of "Life Coaches" as there are days in the year. They have just popped up from everywhere. You can even become a certified life coach over the internet (although I'm not sure who's certifying the people who are giving the certificates). Just think! You can be someone's Life Coach and have never left your own home! That's amazing! All someone needs is the money for a website and they are a Life Coach. WOW! I guess getting certified (by who knows who) makes you an even better Life Coach ... I guess. I feel the same way about "Life Coaches" as I do about different styles of Martial Arts. I believe they are all good - each has something different to offer. Yes, there are some bad ones and even some very bad ones. I believe even a bad Life Coach, just like learning a bad Martial Art style, is better than no martial arts style or Life Coach at all. Yes, even a not-so-great coach makes that much of a difference. He/she can help change Life Coaching began for me about 6 months before I got my Black Belt. I had already been teaching for a few years. Karate was my life. Karate changed the way I viewed the world and how I viewed myself. Karate taught me to believe in myself and showed me that I wasn't a quitter! I started applying the same principles I had learned in karate to my life outside of karate. I was a living example that no matter what your background was you could accomplish anything you wanted. I had friends in the karate school who were excellent marital artists. They showed up four days a week. There were some who had their Black Belts and some who were close to getting their Black Belts. That takes a lot of discipline and dedication. But outside of the school their personal lives were a mess. They were broke, jobless, flunking out of school, relationships wrecked - the list goes on. Now, I'm not perfect and back then I was even further from perfect. But I knew how my life had changed in every area because of karate and it upset me that my friends were miserable outside of martial arts. Karate taught us everything we needed to be successful in any area of our lives. We just had to apply the same things outside the school that we were doing inside the school. I remember asking a few friends if they were happy in life or if they wanted more. And I would tell everyone that, "we can be, do or have anything we want, if we know what we want and we are willing to take action." A few said they wanted more. This is my first criteria to helping anyone; they must admit to wanting more out of life. We got started. They already knew my background, where and how I grew up. That gave them the belief that if I could do the things I was doing then they could do better than what they were doing. And I must be the guy to help. I would sit down with them as friends. We would talk and fanaticize how they wanted their life to be and what they wanted out of every area of their life. (This still hasn't changed). Then we would start mapping it out and using the same disciplines we were already using in karate. I would encourage them with weekly follow ups (now we call it motivation, back then I called it encouragement) and keep them accountable for what they said they were going to do. They were soon fulfilling their life's dreams and earning a Black Belt in life! And that, to me, was more important than one in the karate school! What makes a great Life Coach? I don't watch a lot of TV but I have been watching Sylvester Stallone's new boxing show, "The Contender." My favorite part is watching the boxers in between rounds when they are sitting on their stool getting a drink and trying to catch their breath. You see exactly what an outstanding Life Coach should be like. When you are behind in life and trying to catch your breath an outstanding coach does not baby you! In fact, when life is beating you up that's when your coach should be even harder on you. Imagine the boxer sitting down in between rounds and no matter how the fight is going the coach comes over and says things like, "That's ok. You will do better next round." "Are you feeling ok or should we try to reschedule for another time?" Or, "He's throwing more punches than you. If you can, try to hit him back." NO! NO! NO! When the boxer sits down, no matter how the fight is going, an outstanding coach may tell him what (that?) he's doing great but he's not there to baby him or make him feel good about himself. A great coach spends his time telling him how he could do better. If his boxer is losing the fight an outstanding coach gives it to him even harder, yelling with passion things like, "Did you come here to make the other guy look good?" "Do you think there's always tomorrow? Because there's not! You are only getting one shot at this guy. You are only getting one life to live and you have to give it everything you have right now. Win or lose you have to give it everything you have right now, that's the only way you are walking away a winner no matter what the outcome. Right now you aren't even fighting back, life is beating on you and you are just taking it. If you are going down, go down fighting! Hurt that guy (life) let him know you were here, leave your mark!" Watch baseball, basketball or any sport and you won't see the great coaches babying the players. You don't want a Life Coach that's going to baby you or try and be your best friend. You want a Coach who has played the game of life and knows what it's going to take to make sure you win! An outstanding coach is going to give you daily and weekly life drills that will make the hard times of life seem easier. He/she will hold you accountable, and more importantly, will make you hold yourself accountable. An outstanding coach will help you put together a life plan for every area of your life - not just one area. That would be like a karate instructor teaching only defense or offence, kicking or punching, ground fighting or stand up fighting. You need it all! And you can have it all! Yes, there are times when you need to concentrate more on one area of your life. But to have a coach try to change one area of your life and have you think it's not going to affect another area, is misleading - that's a recipe for disaster! When looking for a Life Coach, don't look for a friend. Find someone who is going to get you to take the necessary actions to do, become and have everything you want out of life! Friends want more out of life for us but won't push us pass our limits. You need someone who will push you! Free Coaching Session Are you curious about coaching but not sure if it's for you? I do admit it wasn't easy, but like Brian says it's not suppose to be. Having him there through the toughest times made all the difference. He was tougher on me than the tough times!" "Brian's purpose in life is to change the world one life at a time. Will yours be next? With Brian everything comes from the heart and he has lived through what he teaches." "With Brian's coaching and encouragement, I did more last year (toward my goal) than in the last five! Brian has the talent for seeing what you REALLY need. He also has a way of saying it that goes around your defense mechanism so that you are able to listen (and not block it out). Brian has helped me so much. I look forward to the daily email that contains uplifting and inspirational messages. The "mental aerobics" exercise that is sent on Friday mornings, help to stimulate and challenge my mind and has helped me to think "outside of the box." "Brian's daily emails are a source of inspiration. He puts his heart into his message and lights a fire under those who read it." "Brian,
I know that challenges are the landmarks on the pathways to success. I know that the daily emails and the monthly meetings have helped me get through the landmarks on my pathway to a better life. Thank-you for doing all you do."
